Pottery: Tripod Cups with Texture

Join us for a 2-day workshop where we will use slab construction and various hand-building techniques to create tripod cups with texture. Students will have the option to add handles and additional personal touches to make their cups unique. The first-class session will focus on creating the cups and the second-class session will focus on glazing. Each student will finish the class with a pair of beautiful, hand-built cups.

Pottery: Carve-Through Composition

This specialty course teaches traditional Korean-style carve-through techniques used for decorating tall forms such as vases and jars. Through hands-on instruction, students will learn proper carve-through techniques including scroll cuts, round punch-out, and angled reduction to enhance the aesthetics of your pottery. Carving do’s & don’ts as well as design considerations will also be discussed. This course is for intermediate and advanced level potters. This class, geared toward beginners, will cover the basic tenets of drawing and composition including shading, line drawing, proportion, perspective, and sight sizing. Sharpen your observation skills by drawing from still lifes. Explore various drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal, Conté, and more. Already have a little bit of experience? This class will help troubleshoot problem areas that you run into. Whether it is composition or technique, this class with help you resolve recurring issues. Explore oil and acrylic painting during this 8-week class. This class will guide participants through the painting process, from color mixing and blending, to application, and brushwork. Students will gain an enhanced understanding of composition and perspective. Choose which painting medium is best for you and learn how acrylic and oil can be used together. Develop your own personal approach to drawing and painting as you examine distinctive styles from both classical and contemporary artists. Students will paint still lifes and create a Master Copy from a famous artist.

Introduction to Digital Photography

Learn how to make the most of your digital camera and create better photographs by taking control of image creation. This class presents a solid foundation of DSLR camera use through in-class demonstrations and lectures as well as hands-on classwork and assignments. Lectures and assignments cover shooting in manual modes, image storage capabilities, file types, various camera menus, exposure, light, shutter effects, and the resulting creative possibilities. A digital SLR camera is preferable but any camera with manual capabilities will work for this class. No previous camera knowledge or experience is required. Photo editing skills will not be covered in this class. Please bring the printed manual that came with your camera to the first class. The book Understanding Exposure, 4th Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera by Bryan Peterson is required.

Digital Photography 2

This course is a continuation of Introduction to Digital Photography and meets off-site at designated locations. Students will learn how to be more creative with their digital photographs by further exploring light and composition as well as additional camera settings and shooting in black and white. The emphasis of this class is shooting photographs. Students will be given assignments to learn new techniques. Students must have taken Introduction to Digital Photography.

The book Within the Frame: the Journey of Photographic Vision by David DuChemin is required.

This class meets at various locations offsite and will not take place at the Hermitage Visual Arts School.

Basketweaving: Egg Basket

In this two-day workshop, students will learn the basics of making a traditional egg basket. Starting with 2 oak hoops, learn to make a God’s Eye. Fall Pumpkin Succulent Arrangements

It is time to start decorating for fall! Create a beautiful succulent arrangement in a real pumpkin in this exciting new workshop. Give this unique gift to your Thanksgiving host or keep the arrangement on your porch or dining room table for a month. These super cute mini pumpkin succulent arrangements are easy and sustainable. You will be giving your family, friends, and neighbors ‘pumpkin’ to talk about when they see this unique centerpiece. Each pumpkin measures 3-4 inches, can last up to 12 weeks (about 3 months). When you are ready to toss the pumpkin, simply peel back the layer of moss and replant the succulents in another planter to continue to grow.

Using a variety of art-making materials, this class will focus on the positive psychological, emotional, and social aspects of creativity. Through creative arts, students will enhance social connections and reaffirm that all humans have the capacity for creativity. Students will learn how to approach different art mediums in a new way each week. Discussions will focus on ways that creativity can help improve mental health and how to destigmatize and rehumanize art and creativity. Enameling

Enameling is the exciting process of fusing glass powder to precious metal using elevated temperatures. In this workshop, students learn how to enamel copper using a tabletop kiln. How to prepare the metal surface and the various stages of firing glass finishes will be explained. Layering opaque and translucent glass enamel colors will be explored for effect and learning to create texture on the metal beforehand to add to the enamel process. Techniques such as sgraffito will be introduced as well as sifting, using templates, and wet packing enamel.

Hammered: Introduction to Metals

It is amazing what you can create with some copper wire, a hammer, and some patience. Learn the basics of metal working with copper. In this class, you will learn to make all the components needed to assemble a finished piece of jewelry, including jump rings, ear wires, clasps, and connectors. In addition to hammering, you will learn filing, texturing, stamping and patina work for copper. Come out of the class with a beautiful pair of earrings that you created.

Living Terrariums for Families!

Bring on creativity this fall with a fun, family terrarium workshop. Using real plants, participants will create a living garden inside a glass globe. Each terrarium will feature live moss and air plants alongside natural elements such as sand, stones, and crystals to add a unique twist. The workshop will conclude with other unique ways to customize your project and easy-care instructions on how to maintain your living air plants. This workshop is geared toward families with all children accompanied by an adult. Registrations are based on the number of terrariums. Please register for the number of terrariums your family intends to create.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to their start date. Please register as early as possible to help us confirm classes and attendance.

Class Fees:
Our class and workshop fees consist of: tuition, studio fees, and supplies. Tuition helps us pay our instructors, studio fees cover wear and tear on the facility and equipment, and supply fees cover the cost of supplies specific to the class or workshop. In some classes, students may be asked to purchase or bring in additional materials for personal use.

Class and Workshop Refund Policy:
The Hermitage will issue a refund if the cancelation request is made within one week of the class starting minus a processing fee. The Hermitage will not issue refunds or transfers after the class has started. Please make selections carefully and mark your calendar.
